Where are we
We
are located in Cambridge which is near Hamilton, situated approximately
150 kilometres South of Auckland on New
Zealand’s North Island.
"In
1864 the headquarters of the Third Regiment of the Waikato
Militia was
established at "Camp Cambridge'. Three years
later the militia disbanded, and those who remained in the district
were to form the foundation of today's vibrant, distinctive town.
Cambridge was named after the Commander-in-Chief of the British
Army, Queen Victoria's first cousin, the Duke of Cambridge. "
The name conjures up images of the English university town,
an impression not lost with the appearance of the New
Zealand town.
Cambridge was made a town district in 1882 and in 1886 became
a borough.
Before
European settlement the Cambridge area was often
a site of Maori tribal conflict, with Maungatautari mountain
and the
Waikato River being both practically and culturally
important
features of the landscape. Conflict between the
British and the Maori inhabitants, particularly supporters
of the Kingitanga
movement, eventuated in land confiscations.
The land around Cambridge is rich, the climate mild, and
the town itself has a unique beauty and atmosphere. The many
trees,
historical buildings and village green give the appearance
of English country life. Cambridge, however, while keeping
its quiet
charm, is a town positively humming with activity. It is
one of the fastest growing rural communities in New Zealand.
